In Madagascar, as elsewhere, children prefer lychees to vegetables called "brède". In this pre-braille (constellation) activity, these blind students choose their favourite food. And they practice differentiating almost identical Braille characters on LEGO Braille bricks.
In the original Flower Picking activity, the aim is to distinguish between 2 combinations of dots that are very similar.
The children have to look for Flowers on the base plate (letters F) and leave the Mushrooms (letter M).
These 2 letters were chosen because they have something in common.
In fact, the F and the M both represent points 1 and 4:
- Points 1, 2, 4 for the F
- Points 1, 4 for the M
There are no mushrooms in Madagascar! So we developed a local version of this activity with the participation of the children. The two girls started by choosing L for Lychee and B for Brède (name of all kinds of leafy vegetables, such as spinach). The two letters are quite similar and have two points in common: point 1 and 2.
They tested the activity and had so much fun that they decided to add a difficulty: another food and therefore another letter - R for Rice.
